Serger, Overlock and Coverstitch Repair
Knives, loopers, tension and differential feed set right.
A serger has more moving parts in a small space than almost any home machine, and everything has to meet at the same instant. When the stitch falls apart it is usually looper timing, a dull knife, or lint packed where the tension springs live. Bring it in and we will show you what we find at no charge.
What the service includes
- Upper and lower looper timing set to the needle
- Knife edge and overlap adjusted, or a new knife fitted
- Needle bar height and needle guard clearance corrected
- All tension units taken apart, cleaned of lint and set on fabric
- Differential feed and stitch length linkage freed up and adjusted
- Stitch finger, throat plate and presser foot checked for wear
- Coverstitch and chainstitch conversions checked on knit test pieces
Problems we fix every week
If it uses a needle and thread to sew, we repair it. Home machines, industrial machines, embroidery machines, sergers, quilting machines and antiques.
The knife is not cutting the edge clean, it chews the fabric
Loops hang loose off the edge of the seam
The needle thread breaks as soon as I start sewing
The fabric stretches and waves as it feeds through
The loopers are out of time and the needle hits them
The stitch will not form at all, it just makes a chain of thread
It eats the fabric at the start of a seam
The coverstitch skips on knit hems
It is packed with lint and runs loud and hot
I thread it exactly like the book says and the stitch is still wrong
How a repair works
-
Bring the machine and a fabric scrap
Bring a piece of the knit or woven that gave you trouble, and the thread if it is unusual. A serger behaves differently on every material.
-
Free estimate on the bench
We open the front and side covers, look at looper timing and the knife, and tell you what it needs. No charge for the diagnosis.
-
Repair, then set the stitch
After the mechanical work we set every tension on your fabric, and check the 4-thread, 3-thread and rolled hem settings if the machine does them.
Common questions
Can you sharpen or replace a serger knife?
We replace the moving knife when it is worn and adjust the overlap so the cut is clean. Knives are a wear part, and we stock them for common home and industrial sergers.
Mine is threaded right but the stitch is still bad. Why?
Threading is only half of it. If looper timing is off by a fraction, or the needle guard has drifted, the stitch cannot form no matter how well you thread. That is a bench adjustment, not something to fix at home.
Do you service coverstitch machines?
Yes, coverstitch and combination overlock and coverstitch machines. These need the needle to looper relationship set carefully or they skip on knits.
Do you work on industrial overlock machines?
Yes. Merrow, Juki, Brother, Pegasus, Yamato, Siruba and similar industrial overlock and safety stitch machines, in the shop or at your plant within 150 miles.
How much will it cost?
Call (727) 321-9344 and describe what it is doing. The estimate is free, and we will not start billed work until you have heard what the repair involves and agreed to it.
